Purpose of Form I-90
Replacement of Green Card: Lawful permanent residents, commuter status residents, and conditional permanent residents use the I-90 application for replacing or renewing their Permanent Resident Cards. However, conditional permanent residents cannot use this application to replace an expired or soon-to-expire card. Instead, they must file a petition to remove the conditions on their residency.
Immigration authorities give a two-year Permanent Resident Card to conditional residents. They got it through marriage or entrepreneurship. If their conditional status is about to expire in 90 days, they must file Form I-751 or Form I-829, depending on how they got their status.
USCIS will automatically extend the conditional permanent resident status once they receive a properly filed Form I-751 or I-829 and adjudicate the petition. The Form I-797 Receipt Notice for the pending petition will serve as proof of conditional permanent resident status.
